CAIRO — An 8-year-old Saudi girl has divorced her middle-aged husband after her father forced her to marry him last year in exchange for about $13,000, her lawyer said Thursday.
A court in the central Oneiza region previously rejected a request by the girl's mother for a divorce and ruled that the girl would have to wait until she reached puberty to file a petition then.
There are no laws in Saudi Arabia defining the minimum age for marriage. Though a woman's consent is legally required, some marriage officials don't seek it.
But there has been a push by Saudi human rights groups to define the age of marriage and put an end to the phenomenon.
One Saudi human rights activist Sohaila Zain al-Abdeen was optimistic that the girl's divorce would help efforts to get a law passed enforcing a minimum marriage age of 18.
"Unfortunately, some fathers trade their daughters," she told The Associated Press. "They are weak people who are sometimes in need of money and forget their roles as parents."
The 8-year-old girl's marriage was not the only one in the kingdom to receive attention in recent months. Saudi newspapers have highlighted several cases in which young girls were married off to much older men or young boys including a 15-year-old girl whose father, a death-row inmate, married her off to a cell mate.

When Justice is Blind, Deaf, and Dumb

A Utah mother of four small children has been jailed on a judge's order that she serve 30 days behind bars for allegedly sending a text message while she was watching a court proceeding.
The original situation happened when Henwood's husband and Jackson's stepson, Josh Henwood, was in court over a civil dispute involving a development project
on which he worked. Jackson is Mrs. Henwood's father in-law.
Susan Henwood allegedly sent a text message, an action that didn't affect the hearing, its participants, or the judge, but later was reported to him by a member of the court staff, according to Jackson.
She was summoned to court where Henriod ordered her immediately to jail for 30 days, responding to a request for bail with the condition that would be allowed only if her husband paid a $70,000 judgment stemming from the civil dispute, Jackson reported.
Jackson reported there were no notices or warnings posted, a statement contradicted by the clerk's office spokeswoman, who told WND that visitors to court were told of the judge's ban on text messages. However, when asked how the warning was delivered, by sign or verbal statement, she said, "I have no idea."
He pointed out that the judge has made similar rulings in the past, once telling a woman in court for having too many dogs after having been cited earlier for the same thing: "She should have taken a gun and shot the other five before she came back to court, if she didn't have any other options … She's going to jail today."
Conversely, in another case, Henriod gave a former teacher probation for having sex nearly 50 times with a 16-year-old boy.
"What is of primary importance to me is that [the boy] is doing well," the judge ruled.

Tax Idea is Garbage
Woe is me. We never seem to have enough money to repair the city streets. Now the Eugene City Council is considering a 5 percent tax on trash collection within the city limits.
What does trash collecting have to do with street repair you might ask? Well it seems in the council's infinite wisdom, garbage trucks are heavy therefore they cause more wear and tear on our streets. While that may be slightly true, what about fire engines, buses, gravel trucks, etc. don't they all cause about the same wear on the streets?
Garbage companies are not in the tax collecting business but it seems the government is in the garbage dispensing business. This is just another example of government unfairly singling out one activity they think they can tax without too much complaint just like taxing smokers to fund children's health care.
There isn't enough money in the budget for street repair but there is enough for a new city hall and police station. I don't get it.

At Sunday night's pageant, Prejean was asked the one question she dreaded most, "Vermont recently became the fourth state to legalize same-sex marriage; do you think every state should follow suit?"
Her answer, which suddenly has made her the center of both praise and scorn, included the words, "In my country, in my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anybody out there, but that's how I was raised and that's how I think it should be – between a man and a woman."
This fat ugly little vermin even posted her picture on his website with the juvenile image of a penis drawn in place of the microphone when she was answering her stupid loaded question.

CNN reporter smackdown
Citing copyright infringement, CNN is pressuring You Tube to take down a clip showing reporter Susan Roesgen belittling tea party protesters and claiming that the protests across the nation was merely a right-wing product of the Fox News Network. During the interviews protesters were cut off before they had a chance to explain exactly what motivated them to show up and instead were dismissed as typical anti-government fringe extremists.
Roesgen ended the interview abruptly but www.foundingbloggers.com continued to tape her in a discussion with other protesters who managed to inform her of the real reason most of the people turned out to the events. Caught up in her own hype, Roesgen asks how did you find out about these Tea Parties? Was it on the internet? Because CNN didn't promote them they must be some right-wing Fox loving consperacy.
While Ms. Roesgen takes offense at a protester that accused Obama of being a fascist and carrying a small poster of Obama made to look like Hitler, she doesn't seem to have the same sensitivity when it came to President Bush. In an earlier interview at a Bush protest when someone showed up with a Bush mask made to look like the devil she innocently calls it a Bush look-alike.

A Whopper of a Mistake
I don't often sympathize with the Mexican sensitivity concerning their public image but I have to agree that this stereotype is over the top. This ad for their new Texican Whopper appeared in Europe shows a small wrestler dressed in a cape resembling a Mexican flag.
Not only is the diminutive size of the Mexican compared to the cowboy insulting but so is the misuse of the flag. I only wish Mexico would have as much respect for our flag and sovereignty as they have for their own.
P.S. as disrespectful as this ad is, at least it's not as creepy as the weird king that we get.

Too Little, Too Late.
Texas Governor Rick Perry has had it with President Obama robbing states of their rights. He is informing the Obama clique to quit their despotic measures or else Texas will slice through DC’s power clutch.
He stated: “’I believe that our federal government has become oppressive in its size, its intrusion into the lives of our citizens, and its interference with the affairs of our state."
“’I believe that returning to the letter and spirit of the U.S. Constitution and its essential 10th Amendment will free our state from undue regulations, and ultimately strengthen our Union.
“’Millions of Texans are tired of Washington, DC trying to come down here to tell us how to run Texas.’”
This is all well and good but where was Governor Perry when George Bush was doing exactly the same thing with his hundreds of signing statements and establishing precedent for Obama to use these extra constitutional power grabs?

Facts are simply "red herrings".
Fox News reports on the often reported myth that 90% of the guns used in Mexico crimes come from the U.S.
While it is true that 90% of the traceable guns were found to come from the U.S., the fact is that only about 17% of the guns confiscated are even traced. The remainder of the guns are not sent to the U.S. for tracing because it is obvious from their markings that they do not come from the U.S.
In 2007-2008, according to ATF Special Agent William Newell, Mexico submitted 11,000 guns to the ATF for tracing. Close to 6,000 were successfully traced -- and of those, 90 percent -- 5,114 to be exact, according to testimony in Congress by William Hoover -- were found to have come from the U.S.
But in those same two years, according to the Mexican government, 29,000 guns were recovered at crime scenes.
In other words, 68 percent of the guns that were recovered were never submitted for tracing. And when you weed out the roughly 6,000 guns that could not be traced from the remaining 32 percent, it means 83 percent of the guns found at crime scenes in Mexico could not be traced to the U.S.
But Tom Diaz, senior policy analyst at the Violence Policy Center, called the "90 percent" issue a red herring and said that it should not detract from the effort to stop gun trafficking into Mexico.
"Let's do what we can with what we know," he said. "We know that one hell of a lot of firearms come from the United States because our gun market is wide open."

The Register Guard reports that once again a group of lawbreakers in Salem are debating whether to grant illegal alien students in-state tuition to Oregon colleges.
This is the fourth campaign in eight years and goes by the name of HB 2939.
“It’s about equality and accessibility,” said University of Oregon student Rachel Cushman. “We basically set students up to go to school and then deny them that. It’s just horrible.”
No mention about legality or propriety.
An analysis four years ago on a similar proposal concluded that it would increase costs to the Oregon University System by $2 million if 80 noncitizen students attended a public university and paid in-state tuition.
"The bill arrived with bipartisan support from Rhino. Sens. Dave Nelson of Pendleton and Frank Morse of Albany, as well as Democratic Rep. Michael Dembrow of Portland. The Education Committee chairwoman, Rep. Sara Gelser, D-Corvallis, said she is interested in moving the bill."

However, Columbia County Circuit Judge Ted Grove has declared the measure and ordinance unenforceable and moot because of conflicts with the federal law and various state authorities.
In a letter dated today to attorneys in the case, Grove stated that these provisions violate a section of the Federal Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1983, which states, "The provisions of this section preempt any state or local law imposing civil or criminal sanctions (other than through licensing or similar laws) upon those who employ or recruit or refer for a fee employment, unauthorized aliens."
Well, back to the drawing board.

Those Wacky Progressives

Washington state senator Eric Oemig not only sits around with the picture of Joseph Stalin as a prop but when asked about a pending bill he gave 2 reasons to vote for HB 1195, it was a "good little bill", and "sticking it to the man".
When asked would he define "The Man", Oemig replied "In this case, the government".

A lot has already been documented about Obama's hypocritical nature concerning campaign pledges and office reality. Here is just another example of do as I say and not as I do:
If you're old enough to remember the forgettable Jimmy Carter presidency you will probably also remember that during the energy shortage he installed solar panels on the roof and lowered the thermostat in the White House and wore sweaters to keep warm. A noble jesture indeed.
Last May Mr. Obama said this: “We can’t drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times… and then just expect that other countries are going to say ‘OK.’ … That’s not leadership. That’s not going to happen.”
The New York Times reported on Thursday, January 29 that:
“…the capital flew into a bit of a tizzy when, on his first full day in the White House, President Obama was photographed in the Oval Office without his suit jacket. There was, however, a logical explanation: Mr. Obama, who hates the cold, had cranked up the thermostat.
“He’s from Hawaii, O.K.?” said Mr. Obama’s senior adviser, David Axelrod, who occupies the small but strategically located office next door to his boss. “He likes it warm. You could grow orchids in there.”
Oh yes on the "we cant drive our SUV's and eat as much as we want". Apparently that doesn't apply to the President. The British Sun reports: "BARACK Obama liked a restaurant’s pizzas so much he has flown the chef 850 miles to make some at the White House.
The US President got a taste for Chris Sommers’ pizza while campaigning in St Louis, Missouri, last year.
After Mr Obama’s election win, Chris offered to deliver frozen pizzas to the White House but was told he couldn’t because of security concerns.
So he took 20lb of dough and three gallons of sauce to Washington.
Chris was due to cook lunch at the White House yesterday, reported People.com. He said: “It’s surreal. It’s a huge honour.”

Give Until It Hurts
Stop me if you read this one. THE GIVE ACT (H.R. 1388. You probably haven't and neither have most of the Congress I suspect. This initiative was one of Obama's main talking points during the campaign so I guess I can't call him on this one.
This act sounds OK I guess, you know, kids volunteering in service to America, you know, giving back. This bill whisked through the House and is now being fast-tracked through the Senate.
What wasn't advertised during the campaign was the real agenda hidden in the small print.
For example, the House version of the bill, in Section 6104, directs a committee to study: "The effect on the Nation, on those who serve, and on the families of those who serve, if all individuals in the United States were expected to perform national service or were required to perform a certain amount of national service. (6) Whether a workable, fair, and reasonable mandatory service requirement for all able young people could be developed, and how such a requirement could be implemented in a manner that would strengthen the social fabric of the Nation and overcome civic challenges by bringing together people from diverse economic, ethnic, and educational backgrounds." Actually this part was taken out of the original bill and resubmitted under a separate bill H.R. 1444. There is also language in the House bill (Section 115) which requires private schools to include their students in these programs and requires private school teachers to take training so that they can "carry out the objectives" of the bill.
In California, homeschoolers are registered as private schools which might mean that even those who opt out of the school system could not opt out of this requirement.
If this act is really voluntary what is the need for a study on the advantages of making it mandatory? Also what is the need to make sure private schools and homeschoolers are forced to participate in this?
I wonder if they provide the Brown Shirts and Armbands or do you have to provide your own?

Hold on to your mouse, the U.S. Senate would grant the White House sweeping new powers to access private online dat, regulate the cybersecurity industry and even shut down internet traffic during a declared "cyber emergency".
The Senate bills are No. 773 and 778 introduced by Sen. Jay Rockefeller and are both part of what is being called the Cybersecurity Act of 2009. These bills would create a new Office of the National Cybersecurity Advisor, reportable directly to the president and charged with defending the country from cyber attack.
The The Cyber Strategic Inquiry 2008, sponsored by Business Executives for National Security
and executed by Booz Allen Hamilton, recommended
to ‘‘establish a single voice for cybersecurity within
government’’ concluding that the ‘‘unique nature of
cybersecurity requires a new leadership paradigm."
These measures are being promoted by ex-President Bush's Director of National Intelligence, Michael McConnell. Mr. McConnell just happens to be the former director of the NSA and is the current director of defense programs at Booz Allen, one of the largest defense and intelligence contractors.
Booz Allen had millions of dollars worth of contracts with the TIA program that was found to be spying on American citizens, antiwar protesters, etc.
They were one of the subcontractors working with the NSA to illegally wiretap American phones.
While internet security is surely one of the most important problems confronting us today, I am not comfortable with the government having even more control. Given their track record for treating the Constitution as a door-mat and their interest in shutting down opposition voices be afraid, be very, very afraid.

Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head
Every time it rains, it rains, pennies from heaven.
In Colorado it does. Apparently it's against the law there to collect rain water. Not satisfied with just selling water rights to water in rivers, streams and lakes, Colorado insists that the government owns the water that falls on your property. It should be allowed to fall to the ground and flow unimpeded into surrounding creeks and streams, the law states, to become the property of farmers, ranchers, developers and water agencies that have bought the rights to those waterways.
"If you try to collect rainwater, well, that water really belongs to someone else," said Doug Kemper, executive director of the Colorado Water Congress. "We get into a very detailed accounting on every little drop."
Frank Jaeger of the Parker Water and Sanitation District, on the arid foothills south of Denver, sees water harvesting as an insidious attempt to take water from entities that have paid dearly for the resource.
"Every drop of water that comes down keeps the ground wet and helps the flow of the river," Jaeger said. He scoffs at arguments that harvesters like Holstrom only take a few drops from rivers. "Everything always starts with one little bite at a time."
In other words, we can't keep track of millions of illegal aliens but we can track every drop of water.

"If you try to collect rainwater, well, that water really belongs to someone else," said Doug Kemper, executive director of the Colorado Water Congress. "We get into a very detailed accounting on every little drop."
Frank Jaeger of the Parker Water and Sanitation District, on the arid foothills south of Denver, sees water harvesting as an insidious attempt to take water from entities that have paid dearly for the resource.
"Every drop of water that comes down keeps the ground wet and helps the flow of the river," Jaeger said. He scoffs at arguments that harvesters like Holstrom only take a few drops from rivers. "Everything always starts with one little bite at a time."
In other words, we can't keep track of millions of illegal aliens but we can track every drop of water.
